Setting up a home-based online business

Have you ever thought of working from the comfort of your home? With today’s technology advances, it is not impossible to have a full-time home-based job and career. In fact, more and more people are telecommuting from home, even if they are attached to a brick and mortar company. Opportunities are aplenty. But, of course, you will have to do some research and find your own niche areas.

The Basics

Online businesses vary tremendously. It can be a small start-up or a multi-million dollar venture. For the small home-based ones, you can start with a minimal upfront investment. The basic minimum you must have is a reasonably fast connection to the Internet together with a computer system and preferably also a printer. You may need some cash for initial investments, but this is not absolutely necessary as there is a lot of programs that do not required you to pay anything upfront.

Getting Started

Getting started is the most crucial step, but it may not be as daunting as it seems. Look around and search for a suitable programs or programs. Do you think you can do direct sales? Given the products, are you able to generate enough sales to earn you a comfortable sum of commissions every month simply by word of mouth, or would you rather tap on the enormous cyberspace for a wider customer base?

Undoubtedly, the Internet offers you a wider opportunity, but what if you are not the techno-savvy type? Don’t worry. There are people and companies – internet service providers, web designers, e-commerce solutions providers - offering services there that can put your business online in no time, and at very affordable cost. Of course, if you ever think of building an online business long term, the best is to have your own domain (www.yourcompany.com) name and your own website to develop your own business identity.

What to Sell?

If you have your own products, well and good. Selling your own products is most profitable because you do not have to share the profit. Currently, one of the most profitable such venture for the home-based Internet business is creating and selling your own info products. Ever heard of ebooks or eguides? Well, if you have a flair for writing why not write something that you are expert in. There may be people out there who would be interested in what you know! There are a lot of simple ebook compiler programs or do-it-yourself kit to help you make it!

But what if you don’t have your own product? There are a lot of companies out there with an enormous range of products – you name it, they have it - for you to sell. No, you do not have to buy wholesale from them, nor do you need to stock a whole list of inventory! Know about wholesale dropshippers or affiliate programs? Your only responsibility is to find buyers. The buyers will get their products direct from the merchant and the merchant pays you your due, which can be in the form of fixed commissions (as with affiliate programs) or the profit (your sale price - wholesale price) made from the sale (as with wholesale dropshippers).

Choosing a Program

There are a lot of affiliate programs out there. Most are legitimate businesses, but be aware that there are scams too. Study each program carefully before committing yourself. You may join as many programs as you can manage, but make sure that you can sell those products on offer. Find out how they pay- how much commissions do they offer per sale, per lead, and how often do they pay out commissions. There is usually a minimum sum before they issue you your commissions.

Most programs pay out their affiliates on a monthly basis either by issuing you a check, or by direct credit to your bank account, or through a third party online payment system. It is always convenient to have an account with some of these online pay systems. Opening an account is absolutely free.

Marketing and Advertising

Once you have set up your online business (your website), you need to bring in buyers. Without marketing and advertising, it is difficult to generate large numbers of sales. One way to attract potential buyers is to engage a professional marketing company to do it for you. However, if you want to save costs, you may do it yourself on a smaller scale by submitting your website to as many search engines as you can, putting up classified ads in various media or through email marketing. Be aware that spamming (unsolicited mass mailing) is illegal and most of the merchants will ban you if you spam. Join a proper safe list and advertise through legal channels.

If properly managed, you can generate enough sales to earn a substantial income online!
